Diamonds Class

Welcome to Diamonds! We are the Year 5 and Year 6 class here at St Andrew’s. Our teacher is Miss Cadwallader and Miss Shore is our Teaching Assistant. All of the adults we work with are friendly and helpful; they make learning fun for us!

We are a class of 21 helpful and enthusiastic children who enjoy learning new things and giving everything our best go! We love a challenge and enjoy learning about various topics in a variety of fun and exciting ways.

Autumn Term 1 2021

This half term, we are reading The Arrival by Shaun Tan and Darwin’s Dragons by Lindsay Galvin. These texts will help us to become creative writers and we will be learning how to write for various purposes, including narrative writing, playscripts, character descriptions, reports, diary entries and biographies!

In Geography, we are learning all about the wonderful country we live in: The United Kingdom! We are learning all about how the UK is organised into countries, counties and cities, as well as learning about the human and physical features of Great Britain, such as population, life expectancy, tallest mountains, longest rivers, coastlines and much more.

In Science, we are learning all about evolution and inheritance, through the Game of Survival! We will be taking part in a series of challenges to see if we can accrue enough points to make it onto the Game of Survival leaders’ board. We will need to have our evolutionary wits about us and a keen eye for the survival of the fittest.

In Art, we are exploring the work of the artists officially commissioned to record the first world war, with a focus on Paul Nash’s paintings. We will discover how art was used as a propaganda tool in the form of posters, and find out about the amazing dazzle camouflage which was invented and used during the war. Finally, we will create our own poppy-themed commemorative artworks based on the poem, ‘In Flanders Fields’.
